Tips of the Week - Mosley vs. Mayorga & Berto vs. Forbes

Published September 24, 2008 by Martin Bean

So after two weeks, our resident tipster has had mixed success! Two winners in week one with Rendall Munroe and Juan Diaz, followed by an incorrect prediction in the Prizefighter Series, as Norwich’s Sam Sexton upset our tip for the title, Chris Burton, in a pulsating final.

Still smarting from his error of judgment in the excellent Prizefighter Series, our tipster has been studying this week’s matches and odds intensely, trying to make sure he only get winners this week.

Sadly, at the time of writing, no UK bookmakers are offering odds on the Paul Williams vs. Andy Kolle clash, in what is Williams’ Middleweight debut. It’s a big disappointment as we felt it was odds on that Williams would be a points winner as he jumps up two divisions. You might not be able to win money on this bout as the bookies are not offering any odds but do keep an eye on the result so you can at least get a further idea of our judgment!

So our tipping is restricted to two bouts this weekend; lets start with the main event, Shane Mosley vs. the unpredictable, chain-smoking Nicaraguan, Ricardo Mayorga

Mayorga’s preparation (or lack of it) always leaves you wondering what sort of condition he will show up in. As usual, I expect his conditioning to be moderate at best, making a fast start before the smart boxing of Mosley takes over.

Mosley is not a big puncher and his only two stoppage victories since 2001 both came against Fernando Vargas in 2006, which is significant. A totally out of shape Vargas took Mayorga to a majority points decision at the tail end of 2007 – this serves to highlight the gulf in class.

As said above, Mayorga will come out all guns blazing but even a 37-year-old Mosley is smart enough to evade his punches. I expect Mosley to take over in the middle rounds before he stops a tiring Mayorga around the eighth.

BoxingCapital.com TIP! Shane Mosley to win in rounds 7-9 @ 5/1 with Skybet

The undercard sees the talented WBC Welterweight Champion Andre Berto making the first defence of his title against smart boxing veteran Steve Forbes.

Berto is a firm favourite and it seems the main question is whether he can win on points or become the first man to stop the elusive Forbes? Forbes was able to take the much bigger Oscar De La Hoya’s punches relatively comfortably in his last outing so surely Berto couldn’t make a dent in Forbes? For me, Berto has a chance to stop him, mainly due to his work rate, which will be superior to that of De La Hoya.

Ultimately however, you have to go for a Berto points win, which is certainly the safe bet. Although if you do fancy a Berto stoppage victory, there are some real bargains to be had – Betfred are offering 33/1 for Berto to stop Forbes in any of the 12 rounds. So pick the round you fancy and have a small flutter on the stoppage.

BoxingCapital.com TIP! Andre Berto to win via Points Decision @ 4/7 with Skybet

BoxingCapital.com OUTSIDE BET! Andre Berto to win by 10th round KO @ 33/1 with Betfred

All odds are correct as of 24th September 2008 – Make sure you double-check the odds with the relevant bookmaker before placing your bets.
