Prizefighter - The Heavyweights 2

Published September 10, 2008 by Martin Bean

There is a fascinating line up in Barry Hearn’s second Prizefighter event and it’s certainly not straight forward as to who is going to come out on top. The last Prizefighter was a perfect example of how this three round format can spring a surprise, with hardened Belfast man Martin Rogan being crowned champion after his non stop pressure got the better of the undefeated former amateur star (2002 Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist) and pre tournament favourite, David Dolan.

Betting on this type of event can be unpredictable but we are certainly fearless at BoxingCapital.com and are not afraid to put our neck on the line!

This time the favourite is Chris Burton and deservedly so – he is quick, has real ability and carries power. I don’t often see too much value in backing favourites in this type of unpredictable event, but even at 11/8 for the outright title, Chris has to be the pick for me.

If you are looking for value, I think that’s best found with Pele Reid. The three round format will suit his explosive style perfectly and although he has a tough opening bout against joint second favourite (with Pele himself) Sam Sexton, he can outmuscle the talented boxer for a win. He is one of the only men to pose a threat to Burton in my opinion and at 7/2 is well worth a punt. You must also factor in that Burton could well get cut or injured in his quarter or semi final and be ruled out of the rest of the competition – leaving the competition wide open.

The other possible value pick is David Ferguson who will be fighting in front of his home fans in Newcastle. At 7/1 the odds are long but you should remember he lost in the Semi Finals last time out. He is strong and game, the support will certainly help but for me, not even his greater experience of the Prizefighter format can see him claiming victory.

The format also allows you to do a football style ‘coupon’ bet with accumulators – unusual in boxing because accumulators can often go on for weeks or even months as odds are often only offered on the big fights.

So for the quarter final you could pick up a tasty 5/1 for picking Reid to beat Sexton, Ferguson to beat Simpkin, Burton to beat Ingleby and Morgan to beat Swaby. Good value, although there are a couple of even money match in there (Sexton-Reid and Morgan-Swaby) so you might wish to look at a treble covering all four combinations.
