Preview & Betting Tip - Carl Froch vs. Jean Pascal

Published December 5, 2008 by Martin Bean

Two hungry, undefeated fighters meet in Nottingham’s Trent FM Arena  (England) tomorrow night – Saturday December 6th – in what is sure to be a fantastic contest. Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch will be greeted in a manner befitting his hometown status as the 23-0 (19) Froch challenges for the vacant WBC Super Middleweight Title. In the opposite corner will be Canadian Jean Pascal, who travels to England with a proud 21-0 (14) record.

Both fighters were excellent amateurs with Froch a World Games Bronze Medallist and Pascal a Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist – a title he won in England against an Englishman (Liverpudlian Paul Smith), so he is sure to be comfortable on English shores against a partisan crowd.

Froch is cocky, arrogant and has been calling out the legendary Welshman Joe Calzaghe for sometime – tomorrow night, it’s simply put up or shut up. Froch simply has to back up his confident boasts. Pascal is the more understated personality  but has talent and quick hands; a big fan of Roy Jones Jr,  Pascal has clearly worked on his hand speed and throws a superb right hand over the top, just like Roy.

The fight is being shown in terrestrial TV in England so an audience of millions are set to tune in – what will the see? Well, for me, it’s sure to be an absolute barnstormer. Both fighters can punch, have quick hands and come to fight so I feel certain the audience will be entertained.

Both fighters will look to start fast, Froch with powerful single shots whilst Pascal will look to land sharp, flashy combinations. I think Froch may have a little difficult early on coping with Pascal’s speed so he’s going to get caught numerous times in the first couple of rounds – the Nottingham man carries his hands perilously low and Pascal will look to make Froch miss and counter with the aforementioned right hand over the top.

Three rounds in I expect Froch to be just getting his rhythm, his jab will be landing more and the middle part of the fight should be exciting. When Froch opens up with combinations expect Pascal to be hurt, but the Canadian will stay strong and fire back gamely to keep the fight in the balance throughtout the middle rounds.

Ultimately though, expect the brave Canadian to succumb to the superior power of Froch. Carl is the bigger, stronger and superior athlete. Froch’s long range, hurtful, straight punches will have taken their toll on Pascal before he falls to one of ‘The Cobra’s’ fierce uppercuts around the 10th.
