Published April 5, 2009 by Martin Bean

It is with great excitement that we can announce that Derrick 'Super' Samuels will be blogging his progress at Boxing Capital. Derrick is the reigning NABA Light Welterweight Champion and a man clearly on the rise - you'll soon be able to follow all of his progress via your favourite boxing site. As a preview to Derrick's blog, we've taken the opportunity to give all our readers some background on Derrick, so those of you who may not be aware of this exciting talent can get up to speed.

Derrick Samuels Bio - Derrick Samuels entered the world of boxing when fifteen years of age, a move which saw him start a seven year amateur career. Derrick’s excelled during his time wearing a vest and a headguard; his hand was raised in victory on more than fifty occasions on his way to winning three successive USA Boxing Florida State Championships.

Derrick’s state championship victories came between 2001 and 2003. When winning the 2003 title Derrick did it in some style, leading to him winning the prestigious ‘Outstanding Boxer’ of the tournament award. After his standout victory in 2003, took the decision to turn professional later that year.

Fast forward six years and Derrick’s professional ledger stands at a healthy 17-4-1 (5 KO’s), which agonizingly, could be even better – three of Derrick’s defeats came via narrow split decisions to fellow prospects. Despite those setbacks, Derrick continues to thrive and seems destined for big things – his last two fights have seen him capture the NABA Light Welterweight Title (vs. Jason Davis W UD 10) and impressively halt the experienced Roberto Valenzuela inside the distance (W TKO 7).

Although originally hailing from Orlando, this ambitious boxer moved to St. Petersburg in 2005 to team up with noted boxing trainer/manager Jim McGloughlin (4th Street Boxing Gym), a move that Derrick feels has improved his strength and conditioning considerably.

It seems to all at Boxing Capital that Derrick may just have what it takes to become the boxing star from the Tampa Bay area – following in the footsteps of boxing stars such as Ronald ‘Winky’ Wright, Jeff Lacy and Edner Cherry.

We hope you all wish Derrick well and keep checking back here to follow this young fighter progress, which we hope will lead all the way to a world title!
