Darren Barker - Stops McKay in 6 in impressive fashion

Barnet’s Darren Barker (now 19-0, 11 KO’s) put in another impressive display to dismantle Northern Ireland’s Jason McKay after six rounds in Brentwood, Essex (United Kingdom) on Saturday 13th December 2008.

Barker, making the second defence of his Commonwealth Middleweight Title, took control promptly in the opener and McKay (20-3, 6 KO’s) couldn’t get to grips with his smart boxing and sharp punching opponent.

Whilst Barker was in control from the off (landing superbly at long range), he really start to dominate from the third round onwards as he started putting his punches together. At the end of the sixth McKay was pulled out by his corner, who had realised this was not going to be their man’s day.

Barker can be absolutely delighted with his performance and quite frankly, he already looks beyond Commonwealth title level; he dominated Australian Ben Crampton for 12 rounds in winning this title, followed that with a stoppage victory over experienced Coventry southpaw Steven Bendall and now this faultless performance against McKay.

I’d love to see Barker take on current British Champion, Wayne Elcock—their style would blend well but in my opinion it’s a contest that the well schooled Barker can definitely win. Whether Barker can mix it with the world’s elite is yet to be seen but having followed his career this far, I don’t expect it to be long until he’s knocking on the door at European title level.
