Chad Dawson vs. Antonio Tarver Betting Tip

Published May 9, 2009 by Martin Bean

This weekend sees a rematch between ‘Bad’ Chad Dawson and Antonio Tarver. Their last match saw Dawson emerge as the undoubted number one in the light heavyweight division with a performance that showed his excellent poise, movement and combination punching. I surprised many by tipping Tarver, now 40 years old, to win their original match but Antonio was simply too lazy, never sustaining a work rate long enough to ever look like winning the contest.

To be honest, after the ease with which Dawson won the first contest I am surprised that there was enough interest for a rematch to be made. But, that doesn’t mean that tonight’s fight will not cause interest—I actually expect it to be better than the first match.

Having lost the first match up, I fully expect Tarver to show up in better shape, hungry for victory. Tarver has an excellent record in rematches having beaten Eric Harding, Roy Jones Jr and Glen Johnson having lost to them previously. But, can he really summon up enough to beat the younger (Dawson is 26), unbeaten champion?

I’m not sure Antonio has enough to be honest. Yes, Tarver can show a massive improvement on their initial contest but my feeling is that Dawson has a few more gears to go through as well and that should be enough to see him home. However, this fight will most certainly be a much closer fight than their initial bout. Tarver, eager to prove himself following his lackluster showing last time out, will start fast and be ahead after 4 rounds. But, Dawson should have enough in the tank to box smartly to a close but unanimous points decision.

Don’t be surprised to see Dawson on the canvas at some point either—Glen Johnson gave the young champ nightmares two fights ago remember—but I feel the champion is growing in confidence and will retain his belt.

Boxing Capital tip: Chad Dawson to Win on Points @ 1/2 (Paddy Power).
