Latest British Title News - Macklin vs Barker is Official
Published July 9, 2009 by Boxing Capital
The Championship Circular released today by the British Boxing Board of Control, showed that there was plenty to be excited about in the forthcoming months, with several fantastic match-ups made for September.
Perhaps the pick of the bunch was at Middleweight, where it has been confirmed that Matthew Macklin will defend his British Title against Barnet’s Darren Barker. The fighters are both young, hungry and have contrasting styles, so it should make for a fascinating content. Hennessey Sports won the bids and the contest will take place at London’s Alexandra Palace on Saturday 5th September.
Up at Heavyweight the Sam Sexton vs. Martin Rogan rematch (date and venue to be confirmed) will act as a Final Eliminator for the British Title, as well as being the first defence of Sexton’s Commonwealth Title.
After much speculation, Kell Brook’s voluntary defence of his British Welterweight Title against Michael Lomax will go ahead on July 18th after all, acting as support to Amir Khan’s world title challenge at the MEN Arena in Manchester. Winner of that contest is obligated to defend against John O’Donnell of Shepherd’s Bush before the end of November.
At Light Welterweight, Ajose Olusegun will defend his British Title against Morden’s Lenny Daws. The contest will be promoted by Barry Hearn and take place in September, but the exact date and venue is still to be confirmed – watch this space.
Super Featherweight Champion Kevin Mitchell has been ordered to face Scotland’s Ricky Burns, but don’t expect that contest to happen – Mitchell is looking at the World stage so is likely to vacate and leave Burns to fight another foe.
An interesting clash of experienced fighters will see Jason Booth take on the returning Michael Hunter. Frank Maloney will promote the contest but the date and venue are still to be confirmed.
At Flyweight, there is more activity than has been seen in recent years. British Champion Chris Edwards will defend in his hometown of Stoke against Shinny Bayaar on Friday 16th October. Purse bids have also been called for an eliminator between Andy Bell and the aspiring Ashley Sexton. It wouldn’t surprise me if that contest also ends up on the same bill as the Edwards-Bayaar bill.
