BoxingCapital.com Tips (5th & 6th September 2008)
Published September 1, 2008 by Martin Bean
September starts with a glut of action and this weekend see’s a fantastic line up starting on Friday (5th) with Rendall Munroe defending his European Super Bantamweight Title against Arsen Martirosyan on a quality bill in Nottingham also featuring John Fewkes, Nigel Wright and Matthew Hatton in good domestic contests.
Saturday (6th) then see’s Amir Khan takes on Breidis Prescott for the WBO Intercontinental Lightweight Title in the MEN Arena in Manchester, with a fantastic undercard featuring ‘Amazing’ Alex Arthur defending his WBO Super Featherweight title for the first time against Dagenham’s Nicky Cook.
On the same night Goldenboy Promotions stages ‘Houston Super Fight Night’ featuring two quality contests; Juan ‘Baby Bull’ Diaz against Austrialia’s Michael ‘The Great’ Katsidis (remembered on these shores for his classic encounter with Luton’s Graham Earl) in what should be an outstanding contest. On the undercard Ricardo ‘Rocky’ Juarez faces former Super Featherweight World Champion Jorge ‘La Hiena’ Barrios in an even money affair.
With the coming weeks also featuring the next edition of Prizefighter series, Casamayor vs. Marquez, Campbell vs. Guzman, the first Hayemaker Promotions show (featuring Ryan Rhodes) and numerous other domestic bills, the season is really starting with a bang.
At this point, I should stress that although we’ve done our research try and find the best value and all odds stated are correct at the present time (31st August 2008) these are of course subject to change, so always double check with the respective bookmaker before placing your bet.
Turning back to this weekends action and I’m afraid that there is very little value to be had for punters this weekend!
Starting with Munroe vs. Martirosyan, Rendall Munroe is a huge betting favourite and has to be fancied to successfully defend his title on home turf. For the straight victory, the very best price we could find on a Munroe victory is 1/25 with Betfred. It might seem short but is actually good value when considering a Munroe victory has been widely priced at 1/33. Should you fancy an upset, you can get odds as long as 9-1 on Martirosyan with Skybet.
Given both fighters have less than 50% knockout records and neither fighter has been stopped (Martirosyan’s sole loss came via an eight round points decision on his debut), my tip is to back Munroe for a points victory at 11/10 with Betfred. If you do fancy Munroe to force a late stoppage, you can find odds of at least 14/1 for Munroe to prevail in one of the final four rounds.
BoxingCapital.com tip – Munroe to win on point @ 11/10 Betfred
Moving on to Saturday and Amir Khan is also unbackable for a straight victory bet. Betfred again offer the best odds, this time at 1/20 whilst anyone fancying Prescott’s chances to derail the Khan bandwagon can find odds as long as 9/1 with Skybet and Stan James. Sky TV showing the fight live on Pay Per View and therefore it is unsurprising that Skybet are offering betting in the most markets, with some good value to be had.
Despite Prescott’s impressive 19-0 (17 KO’s) record, BoxingCapital.com simply do not feel he will be able to live with Khan. Expect Khan to start somewhat cautiously before his dazzling handspeed becomes too much for Prescott before the fight reaches the halfway point.
BoxingCapital.com tip – Khan to win in rounds 4-6 @ 11/8 with Skybet.
Arthur vs Cook on the Khan undercard is a fantastic battle of British fighters who always give good value for money. Cook is moving up to Super Featherweight for this title shot and this sees him as the betting underdog, at a best price of 3/1 for a Cook win (Skybet) whilst ‘Amazing’ Alex is a best priced 2/7 with Betfred. Cook really found his level against the impressive Steve Luevano last year and in that fight body shots caused all the damage, with Cook being stopped in the 11th round. ‘Amazing’ Alex is also a great body puncher and his natural weight advantage should see him stop a brave Cook in the later rounds.
BoxingCapital.com tip – Arthur to win in rounds 10-12 @ 11/2 with Skybet
Diaz vs. Katsidis in Houston completes the weeks tips (keep your money in your pocket for Juarez vs. Barrios on the undercard as we think it’s too close to call) and the ‘Baby Bull’ Diaz starts betting favourite at a best priced 1/4 with Ladbrokes and Betfred (Betfred it must be said are consistently offering excellent value this weekend). Katsidis can widely be found priced at 11/4 for victory (including with Victor Chandler). It’s fascinating clash and should be very exciting, with Diaz ultimately prevailing via late stoppage or points.
BoxingCapital.com tip – Diaz to win @ 1/4 (Ladbrokes, Betfred)
