Biggest and Best Prizefighter Yet!

The start of the new season in British boxing got even hotter today when the latest Prizefighter Series was officially announced by Matchroom’s Barry Hearn. It was already known the next instalment in the series would see the Heavyweights in action once more (this will be the third Heavyweight Prizefighter event) but the line up was being kept very quiet – until now.

The news of who has entered the competition really shows just how far the competition has come – we’ll see a former Olympic Champion, the current British Champion, three former British Champions and three aspiring prospects squaring off against each other in seven contest in one spectacular night. It’s quite honestly an unbelievable line up and a major coup for Matchroom in getting these guys together. The line up, in no particular order, is:

Prizefighter Heavyweights 3 Line Up

  1. Audley Harrison
  2. Danny Williams
  3. Michael Sprott
  4. Scott Gammer
  5. Michael Holden
  6. Coleman Barrett
  7. Scott Belshaw
  8. Danny Hughes

The event takes place on 2nd October 2009 at London’s York Hall and is sure to be a sell out. Those that can’t get a ticket will be relieved to hear that Sky Sports will be screening this exciting event live.

Audley Harrison spoke from his California training camp about his excitement at the latest instalment of Prizefighter “I’m looking forward to competing in the next instalment of Prizefighter, I’ve been waiting for a solid opportunity to return to the ring and I intend to show my career is far from over.

“I have history with most of the fighters competing and I couldn’t have written a better script for my return. When I retire, I will tell my story and people will understand why my career faltered, but I truly have found my passion again for boxing.’’

Audley finding his passion for the sport once more may give his rivals some cause for concern, but his former nemesis, Danny Williams, doesn’t seem too concerned, saying ‘’When I was first asked to be part of this year’s Prizefighter, as British Heavyweight Champion, I wasn’t sure. But when I heard that a certain celebrity boxer would be involved I knew I had to be part of it! This year’s Prizefighter will be off the hook!”

As usual in Prizefighter, all contests will consist of 3x3 minute rounds so the action is sure to be exciting and nonstop. The prize fund for this competition is also the highest in Prizefighter history, standing at £80,000!

The bookies haven’t spelled out their favourites for the competition yet, but my personal thoughts would see Harrison as favourite (the shorter distance surely suiting the classy, albeit at time lacklustre, former Olympic Gold Medallist), with Williams second favourite followed closely by Sprott and Gammer.

I don’t see Belshaw or Holden figuring in the later stages, but don’t count out the unbeaten pairing of Barrett or Hughes – both are unbeaten and capable of springing a surprise against their more experienced foes.

Roll on October 2nd!
