In today’s world, athletes in all sports are constantly seeking ways to improve performance and do so by way of an improved diet, enlisting the help of a sports psychologist, partaking in sport specific training and taking supplements to name just a few. We are all now aware just how important preparation is and no stone is left unturned by top athletes as they seek the type of performances to head to the top of their sport.

Boxing is no different; all fighters are looking to gain an edge, that crucial 1% that can be the difference between victory and defeat and ultimately, between being a champion or a challenger.

It therefore goes without saying that anything that can help you improve performance in both training and on the day of a contest itself is invaluable. For the past two weeks our team of four testers have been testing NRG Fuel’s ‘TTP’ supplement. It’s a product that is used by world rated Super Middleweight, Carl Froch, who has given the product glowing references. The manufacturers website states 'NRG Fuel TTP is the ultimate all-in-one formula for rapid gains in muscle size, strength, endurance and recovery'. Our test produced the following results:

First Impressions......

A large box of products arrived promptly at Capital Towers packed with ‘TTP’ for our team of four testers to use. We received the two variations of TTP:

1. A single large 2kg container filled with TTP (Retail Price GBP 36.79)

2. Shake & Take’ 32 Bottles Pre Filled with the required amount of TTP (60g per bottle = 1.92kg)

All was looking good and the ‘Shake and Take’ bottles seemed a very good idea – a positive start.

Ease of Use.....

There are two ways of buying TTP as stated above; a large 2kg container or you can purchase ‘Shake and Take’ TTP which comes in the form of bottles pre filled with the required ingredients. All you then have to do add water and shake the bottle for around 10 or 15 seconds – it really is as simple as that.

Clearly Shake and Take is easier to use but if you decide to buy the large tub, there is not much more to it – you just need to have a bottle prepared and put the ingredients in it before training and add water before use.

Taste.....

In our experience, the taste of many supplements is a definite issue. Due to some of the ingredients required to produce the essential enhanced performance levels, we have to be realistic that it is never going to be to everyone's taste. But, TTP is a definite improvement on what we’ve tasted to so far. We tested the Vanilla and Berry flavours – of the two it was a 3 to 1 vote in favour of Berry being a better taste, but the Vanilla was also nice. Chocolate and Banana are the other two flavours available.

Performance.....

Products of this type, including TTP, do focus on maximizing the way the muscles are worked for the full benefits of strength and muscle power. In terms of our comments on strength, we don’t feel we’ve used it for long enough to comment on this properly but have felt some short term benefits during workouts to date. However, there are certainly a lot of satisfied customers out there (see ‘Testimonials’ below or www.nrgstop.co.uk)

TTP also claims to increase focus and energy – all of the testing team saw benefits in both of these areas. It was especially beneficial when entering the gym and feeling tired and lethargic – taking TTP prior to training meant once we got going we felt really sharp as opposed to feeling it was a struggle.

Recovery.....

The most notable performance improvement was definitely in terms of recovery. As per the tip on the bottle, taking TTP about 30 minutes prior to training and then immediately after training yielded results. For example, one of our testers never uses weights and on the rare occasion that he does, is often aching for at least three of four days afterwards as he has been working areas that he is not used to.

So, in aid of our rigorous testing process, we got the tester down to the gym for a weights session that was much more intensive than he would ever attempt (of course taking TTP before and after the training session). The results were superb – although there were still some aches afterwards, these were only minor and lasted for a single. Considering our tester usually struggles to walk for three of four days after this was a fantastic improvement. Another example was where we did an extended circuit training after a session, focusing on the legs – lots of squats, step ups and plyometric jumps to increase the load on the legs – again, this produced excellent results. 3 testers reported no after effects after taking TTP before and after training, whilst the remaining tester only reported minor aches the following day.

Negatives.....

As you’ve already seen above, there are definite performance benefits of using this product. So where are the downfalls? We’ve spotted two:

Cost – Using TTP adds up. If you prefer shake and take one 32 bottle serving may only last you three weeks and not all athletes have GBP 50 to spend (every three weeks if you’re training regularly). But, it should be pointed out competitors pricing is similar – some may appear to be less at first glance but remember this is TTP for pre and post workout benefit. You may have to buy separate ‘pre workout’ and ‘recover’ supplements with other manufacturers.

Taste – The taste is good if you like milshakes. But if you don’t? This may not be for you. Aside from our four testers, we asked 10 of our friends to have a mouthful purely for the taste (without telling them what it was!); 6 liked it, 3 thought it was ok and 1 didn’t like it all. So it may not be for everyone but it stil is one of the best tasting products of this type we've tried.

Testimonials.....

As previously mentioned, Carl Froch is a big fan of all of NRG Fuel’s products, including TTP. This was reassuring for us prior to using TTP as many of these products can be aimed solely at bodybuilding types so we were pleased a boxer was already using the product.

Handily, the NRG Stop website is full of reviews from customers. Customers can review each product and TTP received many positive reviews, one from David Mellor of Nottingham who said ‘I have tried other products before and have not really been able to tell if they are a benefit to the training. Well with this stuff you actually do feel the difference, my stamina is up as is the weights I can lift and so is my strength and size. If I train without taking the mix then I find I don't train so well and I don't enjoy it. It has a great taste, you mix it with water so it's cost effective rather than using milk, easy to mix and has a creamy taste’.

Value.....

We mentioned the cost above, but there is value to be found – buy the 2kg large tub. Yes ‘Shake and Take’ is a fantastic idea but in truth, its purely for convenience as the actual TTP content is more or less the same. The content of the large tub mixes just as easily but you just need to find your own bottle and measure the amount of TTP mixture to use. Finding the bottle is easy and you soon get used to knowing how much TTP to use.

Value - 7.5

Recovery - 9.5

Performance - 7

Ease of Use - 9

Overall - 8

Summary

We believe this to be an excellent supplement, especially in terms of recovery. The price for all supplements in this field is relatively high but if your budget stretches to GBP 36.79 a month then a purchase of the large 2kg container would be a wise move and could prove a vital training aid.
