Boxing Betting Tip - Andre Berto vs. Luis Collazo

Published January 17, 2009 by Martin Bean

In the first big fight of the boxing year, hot prospect Andre Berto takes on experienced southpaw Luis Collazo. How can I call Berto, WBC Welterweight Champion, a prospect? Well, I think that most would agree that whilst Berto holds that title he had not yet fulfilled his full potential. In addition, he is not yet classed at the same high level of more experienced foes such as Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto or even Shane Mosley. So whilst he’s not at that level yet, by denoting Berto a hot prospect I do feel he is in with a chance of reaching that level at some stage.

So what of his opponent Saturday night, Luis Collazo? The slick portsider is an experienced operator who has been in at the top level, giving Ricky Hatton a bruising 12 round contest before being outboxed by Shane Mosley. Collazo is strong and tenacious and won’t buckle easily.

This really is a fight that will give us a good insight into how far Berto can go. If Berto were to break down Collazo and manage to force a stoppage, it would, in my opinion at least, be sending quite a statement out to the rest of the welterweight division.

But I can’t see it happening. Remember, Ricky Hatton had Collazo down early but he simply refused to budge; not only surviving the full 12 round distance but putting up such a good fight that many felt he was unfortunate not to get the decision in that fight.

So I expect to see Berto outwork Collazo for a close but unanimous points decision here, to defend his WBC Title. It won’t be easy though and I expect there to be some uncomfortable moments on his way to gaining the win.
