Boxing Betting in 2009 - A Busy Start with Murray, Berto and More...

Published January 14, 2009 by Martin Bean

This weekend heralds the start of real action in the boxing world for 2009 and Boxing Capital is ready to start 2009 as it ended 2008 - a winner!

We open up on Friday night as hometown boxer Paul Truscott, 12-0 (1 KO) takes on experienced former British Champion John Simpson for the Commonwealth featherweight title in a Sky televised bill. Simpson is better than his 18-6 (6 KO’s) record suggests and has only lost to top boxers at domestic level (including Paul Appleby and Derry Matthews) so this will be a good marker to see how good Truscott really is.

The bookies are favouring Simpson to claim the Commonwealth Champion here but we disagree - I see hometown advantage and Truscott’s desire to retain his title being enough to see him through some uncomfortable moments in a teak tough domestic showdown.

The following night in Wigan, Manchester’s unbeaten (in 25 contests - 13 KO’s) John Murray defends the British Lightweight Title he won in July (stopping Lee Meager in 5 rounds in the process) by taking on tough but light punching Scotsman, Lee McAllister (27-1, 5 KO’s). The Henessey Sports promoted bill is being shown live on ITV4 and should give Murray soms fantastic exposure as he chases some major domestic fights in 2009 with hot prospect Amir Khan and European Champion Jon Thaxton firmly on his radar.

To finish up an exciting weekend, the talented, undefeated WBC Welterweight Champion that is Andre Berto (23-0, 19 KO’s) faces his toughest opponent to date in experienced former WBA World Champion, 29-3 (14 KO’s) Luis Collazo. This is a fight where we can gage exactly what a talent Berto is; Collazo has boxed at the highest level in pushing Ricky Hatton close and losing a clear decision to Shane Mosley so Berto could make a real statement here if he can stop Collazo inside the distance.

For Collazo, this may well represent his final chance to win a World Title so he will be desperate to get the win and keep himself in content - it’s an intriguing bout for the fan and a welcome start to HBO’s boxing coverage in 2009.
