Betting Tip - Wladimir Klitschko vs. Hasim Rahman

Published December 13, 2008 by Martin Bean

Wladmimir Klitschko takes on former undisputed heavyweight champion, Hasim Rahman tonight (Saturday December 13th 2008) in what is an intriguing contest. The current number 1 in the division against a former number 1, although Rahman only held that mantle briefly.

In recent years though, Rahman has struggled – losing to an ageing Oleg Maskaev was a major blow whilst the way he seemed to quit against James Toney in a fight that was eventually ruled a no contest left a bitter taste in the mouth. Add to that the fact that Klitschko’s trainer, Emmanuel Steward, is well versed on the qualities of Rahman (having seen him up close when taking on Steward’s former charge Lennox Lewis) and you wonder how Rahman could possibly pull off an upset.

But despite not having full notice (Alexander Povetkin was originally scheduled as the opponent for this date before pulling out injured) the threat Rahman poses is real. Although Rahman may be the smaller man, he has a long reach and does the basics extremely well; Rahman has an excellent jab and his right hand is potent, as the aforementioned Lennox Lewis found out when losing his undisputed heavyweight crown. Add in Klitschko’s vulnerable chin and suddenly Rahman may have a real chance..........

Expect Rahman to start fast and really try to ‘have a go’ early. This is undoubtedly his best chance of winning – I cannot see Rahman managing to outbox the huge Ukranian over 12 rounds. If Rahman can land his right hand then he can definitely hurt Klitschko; if he does so, expect Rahman to be able to finish the fight too.

But, whilst Klitschko may have a couple of shaky moments in the first three rounds, he will be too big, too fit, too strong and ultimately, too good as he breaks down a tiring Rahman around the eighth round.
