Betting Tip - Tony Dodson vs. Tony Quigley

Published March 27, 2009 by Martin Bean

Hayemaker 6 comes to Liverpool’s impressive new venue, the Echo Arena, this Saturday night (28th March 2009). It says a lot about the quality of the original bill that despite the fall out of the original main event between Ryan Rhodes and Anthony Small, plus Brian Magee’s withdrawal, we still have some quality action to look forward to.

The new main event sees a fascinating Liverpool derby for the vacant British Super Middleweight Title between Tony Dodson (24-4-1, 12 KO’s who previously held this title) and Tony Quigley, who brings a fledgling 12-1 (5 KO’s) record to the ring.

Dodson starts favourite (odds on with many bookmakers) and I can see why; he is more experienced all round, has competed at this level before and on paper appears to know too much for the younger Quigley. Whilst Quigley may not have set the world alight with his performances to date,  I am happy to vouch for the fact that this young man really does have considerable ability – I can attest to that having seen him up close numerous times towards the tail end of his highly impressive (and multi title winning) amateur career.

The sole defeat on Quigley’s ledger was to now Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Champion, star prospect Nathan Cleverly – no disgrace there. For Dodson, his four defeats have come in mixed company, the most recent being a stoppage loss to now WBC Champion, Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch.

So how will the fight pan out? I expect the more aggressive Dodson to look to impose himself early and rough the younger man up; Quigley has a lot of boxing skills so Dodson would be wise not to let the young man in his stride.

But I think Quigley can come through a sticky first three of four rounds and then start to dictate the bout from the outside, as Dodson’s recent inactivity becomes telling, struggling to find his sharpness after his opening aggression. After eight rounds I see the fight level, but with Quigley’s desire burning brighter. Quigley can then box his way to victory over the final four rounds to record a hard fought, close but unanimous points win.

I see this as a fascinating fight and its certainly one I’m looking forward to. Many have questioned whether Hayemaker can really sell a lot of tickets in Liverpool but I feel sure the show will be a success – not only do we have a highly competitive all Liverpool main event, but Olympic Heavyweight David Price makes his pro bow on the card. An interesting fight on the undercard sees London Middleweight prospect George Groves (2-0) taking on experienced veteran Paul Samuels; this is a big step up for Groves but I expect to see him making the grade impressively.

BOXING CAPITAL TIP – Tony Quigley to Win 5/4 (Skybet)
