54 Seconds - Prescott Stuns Khan

Published September 7, 2008 by Martin Bean

Amir Khan’s unbeaten record was shattered in just 54 seconds by Breidis Prescott. It was a stunning fight as the unknown quantity of Prescott didn’t test Khan chin so much as destroy it.

The fight opened up and Prescott immediately landed a solid straight jab, which seemed to have some effect on Khan. Rather than heed the warning, Khan stayed right in front of Prescott as he started to wing away hurtful, wide punches—Khan took a huge left hook, leaving his legs to buckle, before Prescott followed it up with a right hand and second left hook to put Khan down heavily.

At this point, the fight should’ve been stopped. Khan didn’t know what day it was and it took him seven of the 8 seconds before he could stand still, yet he still didn’t appear to be totally in control of his feet.

The referee (Terry O’Connor) waved the fight on but Khan didn’t have enough of his faculties operational to avoid the ensuing onslaught—Prescott charged in like a red flag had been shown to a bull, looking for the same right hand left hook combinations and another left hook left Khan in a heap in the corner, his head having hit the canvas as he went down.

So there you have it, any potential super fight with Manny Pacquiao or any other of the lightweight champions is on the backburner—not just now, but potentially for good. Khan’s chin just doesn’t look up to it at any decent level—could he turn out to be a sensational amateur who just can’t cut it in the professional game?

People have already criticised Khan’s promoter, Frank Warren, for making the match and there have also been some criticism of Khan’s new trainer, Jorge Rubio. But for me, the loss is no fault of his handlers. The footage I’d seen of Prescott before didn’t show him to be a world beater—just a good boxer who could punch. Khan would’ve been found out sooner or later.

How Khan can rebuild from this I’m not sure—slowly would be my advice. The big losers of all this really are Sky Sports, who just signed a 3 year deal with Frank Warren. Alex Arthur lost his title last night and with it a potential pay per view fight with Marco Antonio Barrera went up in smoke. Then Khan was destroyed; with him being the jewel in the Frank Warren crown, Sky will do well to make as much money as they might have first hoped from the Frank Warren deal.
